Expanders

An expander is used to widen the upper arch which creates more space for your permanent teeth to come in. If you’ve been prescribed an expander, it’s important to follow the proper instructions to ensure the best results.

To use your expander, you’ll use the key (blue stick with a metal pin) we provided you. Once a day, you will turn the key as shown at your appointment and in the video below. It’s important to turn the key at the same time each day and to only turn as directed. Over expanding can cause discomfort and can slow down your treatment.

Using an expander may cause some discomfort, especially at first. This is normal. You may use over the counter pain relievers if needed. Softer foods are recommended until you get used to the expander.

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! Our team is here to ensure your treatment is progressing as expected & you’re as comfortable as possible.

Instructions

The patient cannot turn the key themselves! They will need someone to help them complete this daily task. Use a bright, well lit room or flashlight to better see what you are doing. Have the patient tilt their head back as if they were in our office. Grab the blue “key” and make sure it’s placed firmly inside the hole of the expander.

Once placed, push the key towards the back of the mouth. When the key comes to a stop, pull the key straight down to remove it from the hole. That’s it!

One push “activation” is all you need each day.

In the short video below, Dr. Mike Roberts & Diondrick McCoy demonstrate how to turn the key in your expander.
